2011 NFL schedule

The NFL announced the 2011 regular-season and postseason schedule despite the current labor situation. In past years, the league released the opening weekend’s national TV games at the NFL Annual Meeting, but this year the NFL announced the entire 256-game slate all at once.

The NFL’s 92nd season will begin Thursday, Sept. 8 when the last two Super Bowl winners, the New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers, square off in Lambeau Field at 8:30 pm ET on NBC. For the eighth consecutive season, the Super Bowl champion will host the league’s opener, and the defending champ is 7-0 in those games.

The NFL’s commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington will occur on the first Sunday of the schedule, Sept. 11, 2011. That day, the New York Giants will travel to play the Washington Redskins in a late-afternoon game. The night game will have the New York Jets hosting the Dallas Cowboys in New Meadowlands Stadium.

ESPN will host the Week 1 Monday Night Football doubleheader once again. At 7 pm ET, the New England Patriots visit their AFC East rivals Miami Dolphins. The late game at 10:15 pm ET has the Oakland Raiders visiting their AFC West rival Denver Broncos. The doubleheader allows ESPN to have 17 MNF broadcasts, since there is no MNF game in Week 17.

The Giants-Redskins, Patriots-Dolphins and Raiders-Broncos are three of the eight division matchups in Week 1. One of the NFL’s nastiest division rivalries will also be renewed in Week 1 as the AFC North’s Pittsburgh Steelers visit the Baltimore Ravens.

For the second straight year, all 16 games in Week 17 will be division contests. Over the final three weeks (15-17), 29 division games (of 48 overall) will be played, one more than last season.

The league will continue its overseas push as the NFL International Series resumes (provided a resolution to the current labor situation is reached by August 1) when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be the host team against the Chicago Bears in London’s Wembley Stadium. The Bucs will give up a home game for the second time (2009), and the Bears-Buccaneers game will be the first intraconference game in the International Series since San Francisco-Arizona in Mexico City (2005). All of the other games have been AFC-NFC matchups. If the labor stalemate continues past August 2, the game will shift back to Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium.

Also, the Buffalo Bills will host a game in Toronto for the fourth straight year as part of their regional marketing push when the Redskins visit Rogers Centre on October 30.

There will be three games on Thanksgiving for the sixth straight season. Detroit will host its traditional early game against NFC North rival Green Bay. Dallas will host the mid-afternoon game as it has since 1978 when Miami visits Cowboys Stadium. Baltimore will host the nightcap for the first time as the San Francisco 49ers visit M&T Bank Stadium. The 49ers-Ravens game will be the first in NFL history between head coaching-brothers (San Francisco’s rookie coach Jim vs. Baltimore’s John).

Week 16 has 13 games on Christmas Eve, and just one game Sunday – Christmas Day. In a rematch of last season’s NFC Championship Game, Chicago visits Green Bay in a NBC Sunday Night Football contest. Due to the holiday, there will be no flexible schedule in Week 16, as there are in Weeks 10-15 on 12 days notice.

Week 17 also has flexible scheduling on six days notice as one of the 16 games on New Year’s Day will be selected for Sunday Night Football based on postseason implications.

NFL Network will show seven Thursday Night Football contests and one Saturday Night Football game beginning in Week 10.

In games not on NBC, ESPN or NFL Network, CBS will once again carry AFC games and any game in which an AFC team travels to an NFC opponent. FOX will carry NFC games and any time a NFC club is the visiting team to an AFC opponent.

Six teams each will have a bye from Weeks 5-8, and four teams each will be off in Weeks 9 and 11. No teams will have a bye in Week 10.

The 2011 playoffs will begin with the NFL Wild Card Games on Jan. 7-8. NBC will broadcast a doubleheader Saturday, January 7, which CBS and FOX will carry their respective conferences on Sunday, January 8.

The NFL Divisional Playoffs are set for Saturday-Sunday January 14-15 (CBS/FOX). The AFC (CBS) and NFC (FOX) Championship Games will be contested Sunday, January 22.

The AFC-NFC Pro Bowl will be played the week prior to the Super Bowl for the third straight year Sunday, January 29 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu (NBC). Super Bowl XLVI will take place February 5 at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium (NBC).
