The Pro Football Hall of Fame inducted its’ 2011 class on Saturday, July 6. Added to the Hall’s honor roll were Richard Dent, Marshall Faulk, Chris Hanburger, Les Richter, Ed Sabol, Deion Sanders and Shannon Sharpe.
The yearly induction ceremony has its share of emotional moments, and this year’s stood out for two speeches and one presentation video. Sanders and Sharpe gave tremendous speeches, while the video for Sabol’s induction called up the “power and the glory” of NFL Films.
Sanders said he invented his “Prime Time” persona while sitting in his Florida State dorm room as he explained that he did everything in football so that his mom would not have to work. Sharpe said that even though he was going into the Hall of Fame, he was the second-best player in his family behind his brother Sterling. He also talked about the influence his grandmother was to him.
But the best presentation video was the one produced by NFL Films for its’ founder Ed Sabol. His son, Steve, who ran Films after his father’s retirement, explained why his dad belonged in the Hall of Fame. But the pictures of historic games, coaches wired on the sidelines, iconic video images and music that made the NFL into America’s passion showed the reason for Sabol’s induction more than mere words could tell.
